THE FATHER OF INDEPENDENCE

WHY DID WE CHOOSE HIM? Because: –He was able to unite the people of Malaya who are of different races and religions –He was a brave man to fight against the British colonialism for national independence –Above all, he was a wise man – to be able to secure Malayas independence without bloodshed

WHAT MAKES HIM A GREAT LEADER?

HIS QUALITIES… Humble, down-to-earth –Earned him the respect and confidence of others as he worked on uniting the people. Wise and peace loving –Sought independence without any bloodshed

HIS QUALITIES… Brave –Fought for the rights of Malayans and the countrys independence A man of equality and unity –Promoted unity among the people in the country irrespective of race or religion

HIS IMPACT ON MALAYSIA & THE WORLD…..

FOSTERING UNITY AMONG THE PEOPLE Tunku saw the need to develop unity among the people of Malaya to achieve independence. He travelled across the country and promoted unity.

FOSTERING UNITY AMONG THE PEOPLE (contd…) This resulted in the formation of the Alliance Party: UMNO, MCA and MIC This party, now known as Barisan National, is a symbol of unity among the Malaysians.

INTERNATIONAL CONTRIBUTION Tunku helped to set up the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) and was the first Secretary-General. Tunku served as the President of the Regional Islamic Dawah Council of South East Asia and the Pacific (RISEAP) from 1982 to 1988.

GETTING TO KNOW HIM….. Born on February 8, 1903 in Alor Setar, Kedah He was the son of Sultan Abdul Hamid Halim Shah, the 24 th Sultan of Kedah and Che Manjalara

EARLY EDUCATION Tunku spent his early education in the –Government English School (now is the Sultan Abdul Hamid College) –Debsirin School, Bangkok –Penang Free School He was later awarded the Kedah State Scholarship to study in St. Catherines College in the University of Cambridge

HIS EARLY LIFE In 1949, Tunku graduated with a Degree in Law. He was then posted to serve at the Legal Officers Office, Alor Star. Then, he requested to be transferred to Kuala Lumpur as a Deputy Public Prosecutor. ©2006 Penang Free School Online

INTO THE POLITICS When in Kuala Lumpur, Tunku joined the United Malays National Organization (UMNO). In August 1951, Tunku succeeded Datuk Onn Jaafar as President of UMNO.

FIGHTING FOR FREEDOM In 1954, Tunku headed the first delegation to London asking for Independence of Malaya. However, the first delegation was unsuccessful.

ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE After winning the first federal general election in 1955, Tunku was elected as Malayas First Chief Minister. Then, he headed the second delegation to London asking for independence.

MERDEKA! After the second negotiation, Britain agreed to Malayas Independence. This historical day falls on the 31 st August 1957.

MALAYSIA WAS BORN Another important contribution by Tunku was the formation of Malaysia on 16 September Malaysia at that time constituted of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. Singapore left Malaysia on 9 th August 1965.

LATER PART OF HIS LIFE… Tunku stepped down as Malaysias Prime Minister on 1970 and was succeeded by Tun Abdul Razak. The year after he quit his post as the President of UMNO. On 6 th December 1990, Tunku passed away at the age of 87. <<<back
