2. Read the text. New Year´s Day It is observed on 1st January. People generally have New Year´s parties and social gatherings. Martin Luther King Day It is held on 3rd Monday in January. It celebrates the life and achievements of M. L. King, an American civil rights leader. He is most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for racial equality in the USA. Picture 2 – Martin Luther King Picture 1 – New Year´s fireworks

Valentine´s Day It is celebrated on 14th February in memory of St. Valentine. Lovers express their feelings by exchanging gifts, flowers and greeting cards. Easter It is celebrated on the Sunday following Good Friday. It commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Christians believe it occurred on the third day after Jesus´ crucifixion. People paint Easter eggs with bright colours. Many places organize eggs hunting for kids. Egg hunts involve hunting hidden plastic eggs that contain candy. Picture 3 Picture 4 – Easter Egg hunt

Memorial Day It is celebrated last Monday in May. It commemorates Americans who fought for the country and died in wars. Many people travel on this long holiday weekend. Picture 5 Independence Day It is celebrated on 4th July. The USA declared its independence from Great Britain on 4th July, 1776, so it´s very important day in the history of the USA. There are grand fireworks displays in many places this night. Parades, family picnics or softball games take place this day. Picture 6

Halloween This festival is held on 31st October. After it gets dark, children walks through neighbourhoods asking for candy. Children are often dressed in scary costumes, such as a which or a ghost. On this night children shout „trick-or-treat“. It means that if candy is not given to them, the adult will be a subject to a trick or prank. You can also see pumpkins outside people´s houses. Children carve faces into the pumpkins and place candles inside. These carved pumpkins are called jack- o-lanterns. Picture 7 Picture 8

Thanksgiving Day This typical American festival is celebrated fourth Thursday in November. People typically reunite with their families during holidays. Thanksgiving dinner consists of turkey with stuffing, corn, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving celebration started when the Pilgrims (early settlers) survived the harsh winter in 1621 with the help of Native Americans (called Indians) who helped them learn how to grow corn and catch eel. After the Thanksgiving Day people start to buy Christmas presents. Picture 10 – Thanksgiving dinner Picture 9 – The first Thanksgiving

Christmas The most important day is 25 December. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. Many people purchase a tree and decorate it with lights and tinsel. Many houses are decorated with Christmas lights, and you may see animal models like reindeers lit up in front yards. Children believe that if they set out milk and cookies on Christmas Eve, Santa Claus will leave gifts for them under the Christmas tree. Of course, Santa Claus is an imaginary character. People sing Christmas carols and send Christmas cards to their friends and relatives. Picture 11 – Santa Claus (USA) Picture 12 – A Christmas tree in New York
