SOCM-2 Seminar Data Link Benefits Presented By: Dennis Addison, FAA Date: February 8, 2012

Satellite Data Link Benefits Aircraft message exchange time is reduced. FAA HFRO clearances must be delivered within 3 minutes. Actual Communication Performance (ACP) Total time required by the communication transaction Begins when the CPDLC uplink message is sent to aircraft Ends when the WILCO is received

Satellite Data Link Benefits Data Link communications provides a direct link to the aircraft. Third Party HF Radio relays are removed. Safety is increased when messages are not repeated by a third party. Errors can occur each time a message is verbally repeated.

Satellite Data Link Benefits More frequent and accurate position reports are received via ADS-C. ADS-C contract rate can be increased in emergency situations. Event contracts alert ATC when aircraft are deviating from their cleared profile.

Satellite Data Link Benefits CPDLC clearances use a clearly defined digital message set. The standardized clearance message set reduces the chance of misinterpretation. Readback/Hearback errors are removed. Route clearances load directly into the FMS.

Satellite Data Link Benefits Oceanic Separation Standards are reduced. Lateral Separation 200 Miles 60 Miles Longitudinal Separation 10 Mins (~80 Miles) 30 Miles 30 Miles 30 Miles

Satellite Data Link Benefits Satellite Data Link Communications are more reliable than HF communications. HF Communications Atmospheric Conditions. Solar Flares Multiple ATC Facilities use the same frequency

Satellite Data Link Benefits Satellite Data Link reduces HF congestion. When traffic levels are high, aircraft may have to wait to transmit their messages. FANS equipped aircraft do not compete for band width on the HF frequencies under normal conditions.

Satellite Data Link Benefits Satellite Data Link makes more advanced procedure possible. Dynamic Airborne Reroute Procedure (DARP) Allows Airborne Aircraft to obtain a new more efficient route. Tailored Arrivals This procedure uplinks an Optimized Profile Descent to the aircraft FMS. ADS-C CDP This procedure allows a controller to Climb/Descend another aircraft through the altitude of a blocking aircraft.
