What is behind the tidal wave of dementia sweeping the population of older adults? 1.More unacknowledged/uncorrected hearing loss in older adults than at any time in history 2.Structural and nutritional changes in the food supply, including increases of heavy metal accumulation in the broader population. 3.Pervasive chronic dehydration & inflammation in population of older adults 4.We are the most overmedicated society in the world 5.Combined with increases in pathological and man-made disease

Symptomatic comparison: AD & HL DigiCare ®

2011 Study: Relationship re HL & Alzheimer’s Feb Study, Johns Hopkins (National Institute on Aging): Mild Hearing Loss (HL) 2x Alzheimer’s Disease (AD); Moderate HL 3x AD; and Severe Hearing Loss 5X AD in older adults with both HL loss and AD— Archives of Neurology.

University of South Florida study (1996) Out of 52 elderly patients that were diagnosed with “serious” memory disorders… 49 were found to suffer from “serious” unmitigated hearing loss None utilized hearing aids for their hearing loss After fitting of hearing aids & 6 months of AR, study reduced to a handful of subjects DigiCare ®

Hearing Correction in Older Adults Reduces the amount of glucose needed in the brain to participate in spontaneous communication Improves speech discrimination, cognition, attention, and short-term memory Decreases the risk of overdiagnosis or misdiagnosis of dementias in older adults Improves social interaction, personal relationships, and physical and mental health Raises mental performance; reduces social isolation

Said that great deaf & blind lady, Helen Keller: “The problems of deafness are deeper and more complex, if not more important, than those of blindness. Deafness is a much worse misfortune. For it means the loss of the most vital stimulus-- the sound of the voice that brings language, sets thoughts astir and keeps us in the intellectual company of man.” Let’s look at why hearing is important from one who knew…

In her later years Helen Keller confided in a letter to a friend that “after a lifetime in silence and darkness, to be deaf is a greater affliction than to be blind...Hearing is the soul of knowledge and information of a high order. To be cut off from hearing is to be isolated indeed.”

As a long-standing profoundly deaf professional, for many years I have researched, published, and lectured on the psychology of hearing impairment. I have experienced much of what my patients have experienced. I can tell you that when I took advantage of the technological and auditory rehabilitative solutions, I was healthier and achieved more in my life, and my family enjoyed a more engaged father, husband, and friend.
