Returning Parent Meeting May 2014 Motivating our Athletes Elkhart United Aquatics Mission: We will use the sport of swimming to build character, leadership & discipline into youth of Elkhart.

The Purpose We want to make sure everyone understands the importance of Mental Strength and its role in sports in general.

Just One Story 1964 Dick Roth – Appendicitis attack – Gold Medal

Common Story

Extrinsic vs Intrinsic Extrinsic rewards is where the motivation to do something comes from outside the individual Intrinsic rewards is where the motivation to do something comes from inside the individual

Types of Extrinsic Rewards Rewards can come in the form of verbal rewards (i.e. telling someone“good job!”), physical rewards (i.e. a pat on the back), or tangible rewards (i.e. giving someone money, food, or a medallion), among others.

Extrinsic Rewards Task-Non contingent rewards –Just showing up Engagement contingent rewards -Participating Completion contingent rewards -Completion Performance contingent rewards-given in response to level of performance Unexpected rewards

Types of Intrinsic Rewards Integrated regulation – athlete believes the activity is important Identified regulation-athlete likes the sport/activity (My preferred) Introjected regulation-athlete likes the attention that he/she receives by doing the sport/activity External regulation-only participates because they believe they have to or that they may get a reward

In Teaching Intrinsic, Intrinsic, Intrinsic

In Sports You really have to look at the types of rewards and where the swimmer is in the progression. Intrinsic is preferred Extrinsic motivation is involved already through ribbons, times, talk Goals, Goals, Goals

Goals Long term Short term Immediate These goals greatly effect a swimmer’s internal motivation.

What to Remember What you say to your child is important. Most of the time when we are frustrated with their performance we react in a negative way which will also have a negative impact on their internal motivation and can produce a spiral effect. Developmentally for 11 and unders a lot of factors come together to determine their performance: routine, nutrition, sleep, day to day motivation, stroke changes, developmental changes year old girls

Why – MAGIC Myelin

What can we do? Studies show that a praise of hard work vs ability helps increase the intrinsic rewards If we are going to give rewards, they should be for something that an athlete has control over. At the end of a meet, we should have a strong emphasis on what did we learn. – Steps to success Emphasis should tend to be on successfully completing the next step.

Team We are a team… kids, parents, coaches What we say in social media to each other and about races counts. – We are not going to monitor facebook and other social media sights, but if it is brought to our attention that our club and its members are being seen in a poor light due to comments which are posted we will be calling you in to talk about it. The Safety of your children needs to come first. You will receive your copy of the revised code of conduct in your folder soon.

Success Our club’s entry level swimmers are now turning 13! – girls placed 16 th Above PRO, South Bend, Concord, Irish Aquatics, and Swac – Boys placed 29 th Above South Bend, Concord, Irish Aquatics and one point behind PRO – 8 and under boy’s relays less than 8 seconds away from 12 and under cut – Huge Time Drops!!!

Changes Fundraising Fee Travel Meets – We are still by far the cheapest club around. Especially for our state placing – Price of Training group swimmers stayed the same even if you want to travel – Prices of Developmental groups either went down $25 or up $25 – This is the largest part of the budget
