Title: Physics Assignment: WAVES (P3) How can we see and hear Adele? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qemWRToNYJY

Lesson objectives For a PASS: Be able to state the 2 different types of waves and describe how they travel. Be able to label the different parts of each wave.

Your task You will be asked to move the Slinky in 2 ways. The first movement will be like the way in which LIGHT travels (how the lights travel from the bulbs to Adele) The second movement will be like the way in which SOUND travels (how the lights travel from Adele to your ears) You must look at how the Slinky travels for each movement and draw a diagram in your books.

Transverse waves Light and other types of electromagnetic radiation are transverse waves. Water waves are also transverse waves. In transverse waves, the vibrations are at right angles to the direction of travel.

Longitudinal waves Sound waves and waves in a stretched spring are longitudinal waves. In longitudinal waves, the vibrations are along the same direction as the direction of travel.

Have you achieved your PASS for this task? Be able to state the 2 different types of waves and describe how they travel. Be able to label the different parts of each wave.

Electromagnetic Waves All electromagnetic waves travel at the same speed through space (the speed of light). Gamma rays, X-rays, Ultra-violet waves, Light, Infra-red rays, Microwaves, and Radio waves are all electromagnetic waves with different wavelengths. Some substances absorb EM waves, some reflect them and others transmit them. Electromagnetic Waves
