SOCIAL HARMONY RE Revision

Social Harmony (a) What is a Multi faith society (2) (b) Discrimination is always wrong (4) (c ) Explain why there are different attitudes towards other religions in ONE religion (8) (d) Religions promote harmony (6)

Multi faith society A multi faith society is when lots of different people from different religions live together in one community or country.

Prejudice discrimination I think that discrimination is always wrong because we are all the same inside and should be valued in the same way. It says in the Bible that God created us in his image and loves us all the same. I think that positive discrimination is good because it can be used to redress the balance in business or public services that sends a positive message about people of ethnicity or women and what they are capable of.

Attitudes towards others Different attitudes within a religion come from different interpretations of their holy books and leaders. Muslims believe in religious freedom because the Quran states Let there be no compulsion in religion. However, they do believe that their religion has the truth, the Quran is the word of God and other holy books were corrupted by people. Therefore some of these Muslims try to recruit other people to follow this path too. Other Muslims think that other religious people are just trying to find God in their own way and leave them to it.

Religions promoting harmony I disagree with the statement because religion has been a cause of conflict between people throughout history from the crusades, to Ireland. If religions believe they have the one real truth then how can they be tolerant of others? Religion has also been used to justify terrorist action and therefore this causes other people to be scared of that religion and it causes conflict between people in everyday situations. A Christian would disagree with this because they have teachings such as the golden rule and the good Samaritan that teaches the importance of treating all people with respect. Leaders such as the ArchBishop Desmond Tutu actively campaign for equality in society and for people to live in peace with each other. The Interfaith Network is an organisation that promotes harmony and representatives from all of the major world religions take part in this group.
