Presentation transcript:

To find out… What we think are the characteristics of a good leader. Who the leaders are who have power in our lives. Today were continuing with our new topic about power. In RE youre looking at Religious leaders, although at this stage were still thinking about what a leader is like. What happened when one of you took over the leadership of the class? Was the person in charge a good leader? If so, what made them a good leader? Is a good leader according to one person the same as a good leader according to somebody else? You are communicating, working with others & problem solving…

Youre going to work in small groups. Each group is going to nominate a scribe (or a few scribes) to do the writing for your small group. Each group is going to nominate a team leader, who will make sure that everybody is joining in the discussion. As a small group youre going to have 5 minutes to brainstorm all the ideas you have that answer the question… What makes a good leader? Use the interviews that you completed for homework to help you. You are communicating, working with others & problem solving…

The picture below shows peoples ideas of what makes a good leader - what did you decide in your small groups makes a good leader? You are communicating, working with others & problem solving…

Everybody needs a sheet with the title: What does Wales think makes a good leader? The following extract is on the sheet… Carwyn Jones – Prif Weinidog Cymru Carwyn Jones – First Minister for Wales When Carwyn Jones became the First Minister for Wales in December 2009 he was given the most important leadership position in Wales because of his strong leadership qualities. Friends & colleagues describe Carwyn Jones as somebody who is focused & committed to the Welsh people: He likes to do a job well. A good knowledge of his country & his people have also been a quality that has helped Carwyn reach his current leadership position. He is often described by friends as being a confident & enthusiastic man, yet somebody who is also tolerant & patient towards others. He rarely argues, yet he will stand firm if he believes something is true, a Welsh Assembly Government colleague noted… Different people in the class have different tasks to complete, more details are on your sheets… You are problem solving…

How did you get on? As a class, were going to look through the extract & underline the characteristics of a good leader. Were also going to see why some of you felt that these characteristics were important for a good leader. Swap books so that you can mark each others work – mark it with a tick if its correct & write the correction in if its incorrect. When Carwyn Jones became the First Minister for Wales in December 2009 he was given the most important leadership position in Wales because of his strong leadership qualities. He rarely argues, yet he will stand firm if he believes something is true, a Welsh Assembly Government colleague noted… Whats your opinion? Do you think Carwyn Jones is a good leader? Why? You are working with others & improving your own learning & performance…

Weve looked at what makes a good leader – now lets look at some examples. All of these people have some degree of power in your life – but do you know who they are? Carwyn Jones – First Minister for Wales Barack Obama – President of the United States of America You are communicating & problem solving…

David Cameron – Leader of the Conservative Party Queen Elizabeth II – Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Northern Ireland

Mr Phillips – Headmaster of West Mon School Gordon Brown – Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Think about those people who you have just identified as having some degree of power in your lives. How much power do you think they have? Were going to discuss it as a class & give each person a power percentage! You will need to explain your ideas & opinions. In pairs, you have 2 minutes to decide which of the people above, in your opinion, has the most power in your life. Or, do you think theres another leader who has more power in your life than any of these people (for example somebody you live with)? Explain your answer. What do we all think? You are communicating & applying number… You are communicating & working with others…

Think about all of the things that we have talked about in todays lesson. Imagine an alien landed in our classroom & said… Take me to your leader… How would you explain to the alien what a good leader is? Who are some of the leaders you could choose to take the alien to? Which of the leaders in your life would you decide to take the alien to? Why? You are communicating… Next lesson we will be applying what weve learnt about leadership in todays lesson to religious leaders. The religious leaders for Christianity, Islam & Judaism are Muhammad, Abraham & Jesus. Using Google to help, match up the correct religious leader to the correct religion & find out 3 facts about each of them. You are developing your ICT skills…
