Perú Summer II July 2014

Who is this program for? This program is OPEN TO ALL UNA STUDENTS No Spanish necessary! We’ll teach you while you are there!

What is it all about? The purpose of this trip is to: – Introduce participants to the wealth of culture and customs of Perú. – Give students an immersive language education experience in a fun and safe environment. – Encourage students to seek additional, longer- length study abroad experiences. – HAVE FUN!!!

Where will we go? – Cusco will be the center of our operations – We will spend one day in Lima, the capital of Perú and the center of the second viceroyalty of Spain. – Colonial Lima Here we will tour the Plaza de Armas, the catacombs under the city, the Banco de la Reserva, and other important structures and cultural centers of Peru’s largest city.

Cusco The Navel of the World. – Capital of the Inca Empire and central to many of Peru’s most famous ruins. – Students will spend 4 weeks (20 hours each week) in language classes at AMAUTA language school.

Sacsayhuaman The great fortress and temple situated on a hill above Cusco.

Weekend Excursions Puno and the Floating Islands of Lake Titicaca – We will spend time with the Aymara people whose civilization dates back to 1000 A.D. and see how they preserve their way of life.

Valle Sagrado We will follow the Sacred River of the Inca from Pisaq, through several thriving towns

Pisaq Located at the head of the Sacred Valley, Pisaq was a major agricultural center for the Inca people.

Ollantaytambo The final fortress city accessible by automobile in the Sacred Valley

Machupicchu

Chinchero A thriving textile community that preserves the traditional weaving and dyeing techniques of the Inca.

How does the “Study” part fit into all this?

How to earn credit Students will take a minimum of 2 classes from the following: – FL 201. Global Perspectives Through Study Abroad – SP 350. Conversation and Composition – FL/SP 490. Special Topics in Peruvian Culture – IE/SP 499. International Experience Beginning and Intermediate students may also take the CLEP exam on returning to UNA and receive up to 14 credits based on their language proficiency.

When will this happen? Summer Session II. July – Anticipated travel dates June 28—July 27 – Each class will have several class meetings on campus at UNA prior to departure during Spring 2013.

What about accommodations? During the week, students will be staying with host families. – 2-3 students per family (generally) Weekend excursions we will be staying in 2 and 3-star hostels. – Double or triple occupancy rooms. – WiFi and/or computer available at each hotel.

What about food? Two meals included each day with your host family. Meals on Excursions – Continental breakfast included at each hotel. – Lunch buffet included at Machupicchu. – Farewell dinner in Cusco. Students will generally be responsible for one meal each day, occasionally 2 (on weekend excursions) Average cost for food: $5/day

What about transportation? Program cost will include RT airfare from U.S. to Lima, airfare from Lima—Cusco—Lima, and transportation to all other major destinations while in Perú. – We will travel in airplanes, trains, large buses, small buses, and boats during this trip. All tours are covered in the cost of the program – Private taxis or buses inside and around Cusco are NOT included.

Budget breakdown Approximate cost $3400/person* – Initial non-refundable deposit of $400 due by December 3, 2013 – $600 payment due January 14, 2014 – $600 payment due February 4, 2014 – $600 payment due March 4, 2014 – $600 payment due April 1, 2014 – $600 payment due May 1, 2014 * Price may increase or decrease due to airfare costs.
