Aircraft Design Competition Comparison SAE Open SAE Regular SAE Micro AIAA

Deadlines SAE East: Marietta, GA, Dec. 29, 2005 SAE West: San Fernando Valley, CA, Dec. 29, 2005 AIAA: Wichita, KS, Oct. 31, 2005

Competition Dates SAE East: Marietta, GA, Apr , 2005 SAE West: San Fernando Valley, CA, June 2-4, 2005 AIAA: Wichita, KS, Apr , 2005

Competition Member Requirements SAE – All team members to be members of SAE – All team members need to be undergraduate/graduated 7 months prior to competition AIAA – All team members to be members of AIAA – Team must consist of at least 1/3 undergraduates (Freshman, Sophomore, or Junior)

Mission Profile SAE Regular, Open, Micro – 5 min takeoff time limit (multiple attempts allowed) – Someone is allowed to hold the aircraft during engine rev-up – Takeoff Zone: 200 ft (100 ft for Micro class) – Flight Path: 360° Turn overall travel past the takeoff zone 180° turn travel past the approach zone 180° turn – Landing Zone: 400 ft (200 ft for Micro class) – Aircraft remains intact (except propeller) – Repairs allowable (except alteration of design)

Mission Profile (Continued) AIAA – Takeoff Maximum flight attempts: 5 2 min prep time for each flight attempt – Takeoff Zone: 100 ft – Flight Path 360° turn overall travel 500 ft past starting line 180° turn travel 500 ft past starting line 180° turn – Landing Zone: 200 ft (not exactly sure) – Aircraft remains intact (except propeller) – Repairs allowable (except alteration of design)

Important Aircraft Requirements SAE Regular – Wingspan: in – Max Gross Weight: 55 lbs – Payload Volume: (3 x 5 x 16) in block must be able to fit – Payload: Consist of plates, cant move – Engine: Single, unmodified O.S..61 FX w/ E-4010 Muffler – 1 to 1 propeller to engine RPM ratio – Fuel: 10% Nitro Methane Fuel (supplied) – Propeller: Metal not allowed

Important Aircraft Requirements (Continued) SAE Open – Wingspan: Unlimited – Max Gross Weight: 55 lbs – Payload Volume: Unresticted – Payload: Consist of plates, cant move – Engine Internal, Combustion Reciprocating Engine Max Displacement:.91 in Not restricted in total engine displacement, number of engines, make or model – Allowed to differ propeller to engine RPM ratio – Fuel: Can use own fuel (restrictions) – Propeller: Metal not allowed

Important Aircraft Requirements (Continued) SAE Micro – Wingspan: Unlimited – Purpose: Carry highest payload with lowest empty weight – Payload: Consist of plates, cant move – Engine: Internal, Combustion Reciprocating Engine or Electric Motor Propulsion Not restricted in number of engines – 1 to 1 propeller to engine RPM ratio – Fuel: Can use own fuel (restrictions) – Propeller: Metal not allowed

Important Aircraft Requirements (Continued) AIAA – Wingspan: Unlimited – Max Gross Weight: 55 lbs – Payload Volume Able to carry 96 tennis balls Able to carry two-two liter bottles Able to carry 4 x 4 x 24 in not weighing more than 8 lbs – Engine Electric Motor Multiple motors allowed – Propeller: Commercial

Flight Scoring SAE Regular – Flight Score=Raw Weight Score + Prediction Bonus Raw Weight Score=Weight lifted in lbs x 4 Prediction Bonus=20 - (predicted payload – actual payload) 2 SAE Open – Flight Score=Raw Weight Score + Prediction Bonus + Zero Payload Bonus + Stopping Bonus Raw Weight Score=Weight lifted in pounds x 3 Prediction Bonus=20 - (predicted payload – actual payload) 2 20 points if mission carried out with no payload 20% of Raw Weight score if aircraft lands within landing zone SAE Micro – Flight Score=(10 – EW) x PF x 13 – EW=Empty Weight in pounds – PF=Payload Fraction=Payload Weight/(Empty Weight + Payload Weight Overall Score for any of the above three competitions – Overall Score=Design Report Score + Oral Presentation Score + Flight Score

Flight Scoring (Continued) AIAA – Cargo Flexibility Flight Score=10 x (# Laps/Loading Time) – Min RAC Flight Score=150/Rated Aircraft Cost (RAC) – Incremental Load Flight Score=1.25 x # Laps x # Laps – Total Flight Score=2 best flight scores of above three are summed – Overall Score = Written Report Score * Total Flight Score Rated Aircraft Cost
