Performance Optimizing Productivity & Improving 3M Specialty Additives 3MTM DynamarTM RA 5300 High Performance Rubber Additive Productivity Performance Optimizing & Improving

Agenda Market Status Introducing 3M™ Dynamar™ RA 5300 High Performance Rubber Additive Test methods and results Summary and Conclusions Questions

Chemical resistance impacts compounding and affects processing Market Status Fluorine – Carbon Bond Chemical and Heat Resistance Chemical resistance impacts compounding and affects processing Polymer rich compounds Dry, rough extrusion Additives are used to improve processing Waxes, oils What properties are sacrificed? Is there an alternative?

Introducing 3MTM DynamarTM RA 5300 High Performance Rubber Additive Unique 3M chemistry Based on experimental results described in this presentation, RA 5300 offers both processing and performance improvements Improvements were seen in extrusion and injection molding with minimal affect on performance properties

Introducing 3MTM DynamarTM RA 5300

Equipment / Experiment Set-up Common medium viscosity o-ring grade copolymer used Industry standard compound; 100 parts per hundred rubber (PHR) of the elastomer base, 30 PHR of N-990 carbon black, 6 PHR of calcium hydroxide, and 3 PHR of magnesium oxide Four compounds compared Control Carnauba Wax, Struktol® WS-280, New 3M™ Dynamar™ RA 5300

Experiments and Results Physical Property Comparison

Experiments and Results Compression Set Comparison

Experiments and Results Heat Aging Property Loss Comparison

Experiments and Results Shear Stress Comparison at 100°C RA 5300 was comparable to the Carnauba Wax At rates of approximately 1000/s, all of the compounds have similar flow properties

Experiments and Results Shear Stress Comparison at 150°C At shear rates below 500/s RA 5300 exhibits better flow At and above 500/s, the Carnauba Wax containing compound results in a considerably lower stress

Experiments and Results Garvey Die Extrusion Comparison

Experiments and Results Mold Release Comparison Samples molded in the half round spiral tool all released from the groove easily and allowed for relatively simple part removal All of the samples, except those produced using the RA 5300, stuck in the grooves of the deeper, more submerged sample, pulling the part away from the nozzle tip and having to be pried out of the mold with a wooden tool Parts molded using the RA 5300 released totally from the groove Control RA 5300

Experiments and Results The Effect of RA 5300 Loading on Properties

Experiments and Results Thermal Stability

Summary Based on these results, 3M™ Dynamar™ RA 5300 could offer both processing and performance improvements in comparison to other FKM processing aids Sharper edges and smoother surfaces were achieved in Garvey Die extrusions Improved mold release and fouling in injection molding Incremental processing improvements can be achieved with increased loadings of the RA 5300, with 0.5 and 1.0 PHR being the optimal loading range Minimal affect on rheological and performance properties Thermally stable up to 280°C
