Information Sources 6 Next The Tokugawa rulers controlled Japan from the 16 th century until the mid 19 th century. During this time, the Tokugawa rulers (called shoguns) wanted to ensure that Japanese society would not change. Four social classes were created:Tokugawa Four social classes 1.Samurai3. Craftsmen 2. Farmer4. Merchant As a result, this class structure closed Japanese society from the rest of the world. Each social class had advantages and disadvantages to belonging but which one could help institute social change to help Japan open to the rest of the world?
