OP-ED
What is it? A newspaper article Stands for opposite (OP) the editorial (ED) page
What’s “opposite the editorial”? Editorial = an objective news piece, states the facts Opposite of the Editorial = someone’s OPINION and two cents on the topic Expresses the opinions of a named writer who is usually unaffiliated with the newspaper (different from editorials because these are written by editorial board members)
Background "It occurred to me that nothing is more interesting than opinion when opinion is interesting, so I devised a method of cleaning off the page opposite the editorial, which became the most important in America … and thereon I decided to print opinions, ignoring facts.” - Herbert Bayard Swope of The New York Evening World Herbert Bayard Swope of The New York Evening World
Why important? To increase the range of voices and quality of ideas we hear in the world For the purpose of this class, we will use them to analyze the writer’s purpose, tone, intended audience, argument and how the author argues his/her ideas
