 AP stands for Advanced Placement  AP is a program developed and administered by the College Board  AP courses are college level courses which are taught in high school  AP courses are designed to prepare students to take and ‘pass’ a corresponding AP Exam in the Spring for college credit

 AP courses are rigorous  AP teachers are required to submit a syllabus annually to the College Board for approval  AP differs from dual credit because the standards are uniform from school to school  To earn college credit most colleges require scores of 3, 4 or 5 on an AP Exam

 A recent study showed that students taking AP courses and exams were much more likely to earn a college degree in four years  A recent study showed that students taking AP courses and exams were much more likely to earn a college degree in four years. College Board,  For example, AP English Literature students had four-year college graduation rates that were 62% higher than students that had not taken AP English Literature.

 Pre-AP stands for Pre-Advanced Placement  Pre-AP courses are offered from grade 6 through high school and are designed to prepare students for AP courses and exams  Pre-AP courses are offered from grade 6 through high school and are designed to prepare students for AP courses and exams.  Students in Pre-AP are given specific curriculum and strategies that align with the corresponding AP exams and courses

 LISD will create a vertical team of Grade 6 – 12 Pre-AP/AP teachers in each of the four-core subject areas.  LISD will provide specific training to all Pre- AP/AP teachers in AP Strategies and course requirements  LISD will Improve student access and retention in the Pre-AP/AP Program  LISD will increase rigor and accountability in the Pre-AP/AP program.  LISD will help facilitate collaboration between Pre-AP and AP teachers.

 All AP/PAP- College Board Training – 30 hours  PAP Math and Science – Laying the Foundation – 30 hrs a year, 3 year commitment  All Core AP/PAP - G/T Training – 30 hrs

 Students will take AP style tests (entered into Eduphoria) at specific times each year in Pre-AP and AP courses.  The School will monitor student performance on state assessments and will set high standards for students in Pre-AP and AP programs (commended level)  Teachers will use scaled scoring on rigorous assessments to help decrease a negative impact on student grades.

 Encourage students to challenge themselves by taking Pre-AP or AP classes  Learn the benefits of the AP Program  Be a source of support and encouragement for students who are struggling in AP or Pre-AP classes.  Avoid conversations that discourage students from taking on the challenge of AP or Pre-AP.

 Consider enrolling your child in AP or Pre-AP  Ask your guidance counselor or curriculum department for additional information
