The Munich massacre is a name for events that occurred during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Bavaria in southern West Germany, when members of the Israeli Olympic team were taken hostage and eventually killed by the Palestinian group Black September. Jews have been a major part of Manchester since the late 18th century when immigrants from eastern and central Europe first arrived. Today, it is the UK's second largest Jewish community with around 35,000 people. Jewish life and culture is represented in the Manchester area, from orthodox through to reform.

Although the majority of Jews arrived in Liverpool around 1900 to escape the Pogroms and persecution in places such as Russia and Poland, the Jewish community in Liverpool stretches way back to the 1700s.
