Barbara Barr 2004 Getting to know you  Do you have enough time?  Do you have enough to teach?  Do you think the students have enough to learn?  Do you think there is enough time to teach students everything that is required?  Do you have enough time to communicate effectively with parents and student’s families?

Barbara Barr 2004 The world we live in  Is your average day like this?  Do you work, or know people who work in similar conditions?  Can you identify with the characters in this scenario?  Have you ever had a boss like this?  Have you ever been this type of boss?

Barbara Barr 2004 How Do We Save Time?  We all get the SAME 24 hours!  Do things one time  Have information at your fingertips  Effectively communicate  Specific directions/information  Readily available

Barbara Barr 2004 Why Web Pages?  Action Research  Did not expect to find a connection to saving time and classroom web pages  Hypothesis:  Web pages would increase between home and school  Web pages would encourage more home/school communication

Barbara Barr 2004 Wrong!!!!!!!  Number of parents ing teachers:  Teachers with web pages: 1-5 parents  Teachers w/o web pages: 1-5 parents  How often:  Teachers with web pages: Once a month  Teachers w/o web pages: 2/3 a month

Barbara Barr 2004 More Surprises  Families contacted through phone calls:  Fall  Teachers with web sites: families  Teachers w/o web sites: families  Spring  Teachers with web sites: families  Teachers w/o web sites: families

Barbara Barr 2004 Special Area Teachers  How often communicate by phone  Fall:  Teachers with web sites: Once a month  Teachers w/o web sites: 2-3 a month  Spring  Teachers with web sites: 0  Teachers w/o web sites: 1-2 a week

Barbara Barr 2004 Special Area Teachers  Calls from parents/families  Fall  Teachers with web pages: 1-5  Teachers w/o web pages:  Spring  Teachers with web pages: 1-5  Teachers w/o web pages: 20 or more

Barbara Barr 2004 Classroom Teacher Comments  Positive feedback from parents  Students are proud of the web site  My own kids are proud of me  Really helps in divorced families  Papers get lost, but the web site is there  Students and parents look at the site together  My child never brings anything home  Puts the burden on the student or parent

Barbara Barr 2004 Special Area Comments  Parents used web site for science fair information  Participation up 20%  Fewer parents at science fair meeting  All information on line and no one called  Former students ed the teachers  Parents really used the online information and thanked me for it!

Barbara Barr 2004 Student comments  I think my teacher is cool!  Our web site is cool!  My mom and I look at the homework every night.  It helps because my mom loses the papers.  Other kids wish their teachers had web sites.  My mom is cool because she has a web site.

Barbara Barr 2004 Parent comments  Until Mr. _ had his web site, I never even knew the school had a web site.  I want a list of the teachers with web sites so I can request my child’s teacher for next year.  We need the PTA information on the school web site.  I used it most when I ed my ex husband and told him to look for our boys’ activities on the web site.

Barbara Barr 2004 Interesting Statistics  PEW Study (December 2003)  Parents more likely to use Internet than non-parents  Southern Internet users more likely to use Internet for news and information  87% U.S. Internet users access Internet at home.

Barbara Barr 2004 Interesting Statistics  The Kentucky Long-Term Policy Research Center and UK Survey Center (2000)  89% Kentuckians with bachelors degrees use Internet  78% Kentuckians with post secondary education use Internet

Barbara Barr 2004 My FAVORITE Statistic During the 2003 National No Call List sign up time, which state had the most Internet sign ups???????????? K E N T U C K Y

Barbara Barr 2004 No computers?  Print copies of web pages and hang in your classroom.  Have your web site readily available on classroom computers (home page or shortcuts).  Provide parents/pupils lists of locations to use a computer.

Barbara Barr 2004 What Works  Introducing web site to the students in the lab or classroom  Making site available on classroom computers  Posting new information/pictures regularly and announcing it.  Including web address on newsletters and other notes home

Barbara Barr 2004 Effectiveness  Followed several teachers who had web sites but had done nothing to promote them and rarely added new material or pictures.  The web site that is not introduced to the students/families, is not promoted, is not interesting, does not have changing content or photos is equally effective to no web pages at all.

Barbara Barr 2004 Save time  Parent/pupil handbook or classroom information  Classroom management plan  How to reach you  Supply lists  Spelling lists  Units of study  Syllabus  Homework

Barbara Barr 2004 Examples Classroom and school web page examples:
