Endangered Species Act of 1973 First act passed in 1966 Bill signed by President Nixon on December 28, 1973 Amendment years: 1973, 1982, 1985, 1988 National Function: The act was designed to protect any species that are deemed at risk from extinction as well as the “ecosystems upon which they depend” as long as they are listed by the Federal government as “endangered “ or “threatened.”
