World War I Significant Events of War By: Sarah Fuller, Emily Mammolenti, Megan Sink, Joe Kozinski and John Spalding

Three Major Events Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, 1914 Gas Attacks, 1916 America Declaring War on Germany, 1917

Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand 1914 Heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire Assassinated on June 28, 1914 Was returning from city hall along Sarajevo Street when shot at twice. Victims were the Archduke as well as his wife Sophie

Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand 1914 Assassinated by a nineteen year old Serbian Nationalist Gavrilo Princip Serbian third party supplied guns, ammunition, and training to carry out the assassination Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany supported Austria in punishing the Serbs, while Russia backed up Serbia Origins of WWI, WWII, and the Cold War can be traced back to this assassination

Gas Attacks 1916 Was considered the crudest of the new technologies of WWI The efficiency of the attacks depended on the wind the attacks became unbeatable with the right wind direction Usually used on the frontlines of battle

Gas Attacks 1916 Later gas would be put in artillery shells Shells were released behind enemy lines The worse type was Mustard gas Caused blisters on the skin and excruciating pain First to use it was the Germans.

America Declares War on Germany :30p.m on April 2, 1917 President Wilson asked congress to declare war for democracy On April 4 Congress granted Wilson’s request Germany's renewal of unrestricted submarine warfare and a proposed German plot to ally with Mexico against the US prompted Wilson's action. In February, the British gave the American ambassador in London a copy of an intercepted German telegram. Came from the German Foreign Secretary, Arthur Zimmermann, to the German ambassador to Mexico. Proposing that in the event of war with the US, Germany and Mexico would join in an alliance. Germany would fund Mexico's conflict with the US. With victory achieved, Mexico would regain her lost territories of Arizona, Texas and New Mexico.

America Declares War on Germany 1917 Wilson realized war was inevitable but agonized over the decision for what it might do to the spirit of the nation. Feared war would change America forever, making her tougher, less humane. "Once lead these people into war, and they'll forget there ever was such a thing as tolerance... the spirit of ruthless brutality will enter into the very fiber of our national life... every man who refused to conform would have to pay the penalty." – President Wilson
