iK-16Cluster Presentation What is it? A cost-effective computer hardware unit and a license free software solution for small labs or multiple workstation setups

iK-16Cluster: Components RGB connector RJ45 Network Power supply On/Off switch 3 USB PLUGS Audio plugs

iK-16Cluster: Net able The iK-16Cluster is an Internet able mini-pc with built-in selected applications such as Internet Explorer, Word, WordPad, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF Viewers.

iK-16Cluster: As a Thin Client This low-cost device is also a Thin Client that offers users all the apps that reside on a Linux Server: Firefox, Open/Libre Office, GIMP, Scribus and 100's of teacher-tested educational games and activities.

iK-16Cluster: Open Source Linux Servers are currently the most popular, robust and reliable servers used worldwide. Their Open Source (free) code attracts the best and most enthusiastic programmers, so no issues go unattended.

iK-16Cluster: Kubuntu The most common type of software running in the iK-16Clusters is the latest version (11.10) of Kubuntu, a Linux Ubuntu official derivative for schools and educational environments. It is ideal for users with limited technical skills.

iK-16Cluster: Setup Set up involves a small- form server and several clients, each of which can provide full Inter- net access and hundreds of low-band applications. This type of cluster takes full advantage of the processing power of the server.

iK-16Cluster: Others Thin clients can be tweaked old XP Win- dows machines or Macs. These units provide access to the server applications, much like the iK-16 Clusters themselves, but with increased latency.

iK-16Cluster:The Server The small-form and relative low cost of the server helps maintain aesthetics and a low ratio of servers to clients. A $500 server is adequate for 5 units, and can be used as a station, making the cluster a six unit lab.

iK-16Cluster: Mounting The iK-16Cluster unit can conveniently be mounted behind most flat monitors, reducing the amount of space required for each station. The units can plug directly into the network, or hang from a local switch.

iK-16Cluster: Installation The size and cost of the server depends on many factors, mostly the number of clients its going to service. A $400 server is good for 4 units, while a $1000 can serve 15 units simultaneously or 25 units asynchronously. Initial set up of the clusters includes instal- lation and operator/user training, and 6 months of troubleshooting (server and iK-16 clusters only). Additional training, work- shops and in-services are available.
