Particular sanitary events in 2010 FMD: after the epizootic spreading of the A Iran 05 strain throughout the region last year, outbreaks in 2010 were mainly due to the O PanAsia 2 (endemic strain) RVF: Middle East at risk – reoccurence in KSA (serological evidence) Glanders: reoccurence of the disease in some gulf countries (Kuwait, Bahrain) HPAI H5N1: still spreading in Egypt Under-evaluated: rabies, brucellosis (zoonotic diseases) Regional Representation For the Middle East www.rr-middleeast.oie.int

Budget of the Regional Representation The funding of the RR-ME depends on an annual voluntary contribution of the Lebanese government and on the 10 % of the annual contribution to the OIE of regional Members But only 12 Members in the OIE Regional Commission for the Middle East and most of these Members are not in the highest contribution categories Fortunately, most of the workshops, seminars and conferences organized by the RR-ME are sponsored mainly by hosting countries As often as possible, joint meeting are also organized with our regional partners, such as FAO, WHO, AU-IBAR and others Regional Representation For the Middle East www.rr-middleeast.oie.int

Good governance of the Veterinary Services At the end of August 2010, 19 Members (more than 90 %) requested the PVS evaluation, mission completed in 18 of them (including PAT) Regarding GA, 7 countries requested the OIE – 4 missions have already been done 6 other countries requested OIE assistance on legislation convention of assistance signed only for Lebanon Mission UAE December Regional Representation For the Middle East www.rr-middleeast.oie.int

Capacity building – Communication in collaboration with the OIE Communication Unit a seminar on communication for VS was organized in Muscat, Oman, 20 – 22 April The objectives of this seminar were to identify constraints, information gaps, and best practices related to animal health and prevention/control of animal diseases in the region in order to set up relevant communication strategies Regional Representation For the Middle East www.rr-middleeast.oie.int

Capacity building – Transparency Contact of OIE Delegates when rumours of important new outbreaks or epidemiological events are not followed by official notifications to OIE within a reasonable lapse of time. The issue of notification is also part of any country visit conducted (or to be conducted). Assistance to requesting countries on the use of WAHIS. As of 30 September 2010, 6 Members addressed to the OIE immediate notification report or follow up, on Glanders (Bahrain), Rift Valley Fever (KSA), Blue Tongue (Qatar and the PAT), FMD (Egypt), Equine Rhinopneumonitis (UAE), Rabies (PAT) and Scrapie (PAT). Capacity building – Laboratory In the framework of the on-going OIE Twinning Projects worldwide, 4 projects are being implemented in 3 countries of the region, namely Egypt on Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease, Qatar on Avian Influenza and Turkey on Brucellosis and Rabies The RR-ME actively supports the application of Egypt (RVF), Kuwait (PPR), Lebanon (BT in a joint project with Tunisia), UAE (Brucellosis and CCPP) and Oman (Rabies). Capacity building – Arabic Translation To facilitate the understanding of OIE standards and recommendations, Arabic translation is an important tool used by the RR: Most of OIE reference documents and documents of the RR are translated in Arabic language and all published on the website.
