2 RA VI workshop on WIS implementation, Sofia, 1-3 November 2011 Session 3 – WIS telecommunication RMDCN Satellite communication & multicast Discussion

RMTN configuration - The majority of the links are through the RMDCN - The number of additional circuits on bilateral agreement has increased – Easy to implement additional links through the Internet and cloud network services - A few Internet based circuits - The number of non-operational circuits is 7 - Remarkable improvement in circuit speed - Satellite broadcasting systems are available to complement to the GTS - The majority of the links are through the RMDCN - The number of additional circuits on bilateral agreement has increased – Easy to implement additional links through the Internet and cloud network services - A few Internet based circuits - The number of non-operational circuits is 7 - Remarkable improvement in circuit speed - Satellite broadcasting systems are available to complement to the GTS

4 RA VI workshop on WIS implementation, Sofia, 1-3 November 2011 RMDCN Configuration 49 sites are connected –45 National meteorological services 35 from RA-VI –ECMWF –EUMETSAT (2 sites) –1 disaster recovery site for The Netherlands Israel connected to the RMDCN (June Mbps Mission Critical) South Africa is being connected (2 Mbps Mission Critical) Very reliable

RMDCN From 64 kbps to 8 Mbps 2 access circuits or 1 circuit + backup Some RA-VI countries have not joined RMDCN, mainly due to cost concerns. –This situation is not likely to change in a near future 2 nd WMO Task Team on the RMDCN June 2011 at ECMWF, Reading –Topics related to the requirements for the next generation of the RMDCN were discussed RA-VI Workshop on next generation RMDCN in spring 2012

6 RA VI workshop on WIS implementation, Sofia, 1-3 November 2011 EUMETCast Overview DVB-S file based satellite dissemination system >2900 Users in RA-VI Tellicast multicast reception software using off the shelf PC and antenna systems RETIM and DWDSAT as third party dissemination services for RA-VI on EUMETCast EOPortal at EUMETSAT for user registration and data discovery

7 RA VI workshop on WIS implementation, Sofia, 1-3 November 2011 Internet Primary link for some NMHS –Through VPN connexions To get additional bandwidth at affordable costs –ECMWF products Backup method for RMDCN sites –Operational DMVPN-based solution managed by ECMWF Access method to the MPLS cloud
