Length is a measure how long something is from end to end. This may also include distance, which is defined as the space between points or objects. When you measure the distance around an object, you are finding its perimeter. We use units to measure both length and distance. There are two systems of measurement: the Metric System and U.S. Customary Units. When To Use Which Unit To measure very short lengths, such as the length of your big toe or a strand of hair, we usually use inches. When we want to measure somewhat longer lengths or distances, we usually use feet, or yards. Some examples would be the height of a fence or the length of a basketball court. For measuring longer distances, we use miles, such as the distance from your house to your school or the height of a volcano. Click on the following link to practice measuring with a ruler. Weight & Capacity Weight is the amount of matter in an object. A scale is a device used to measure weight. When you measure the weight of a very small object, such as a leaf, the best unit to use is a fraction of an ounce. The weight of a larger object, such as an orange, is measured using ounces. Large objects, such as a person, can be measured using pounds. When measuring even bigger objects, like a hippopotamus, the best units to use are tons. Next

Weight & Capacity Capacity answers the question, "How much does it hold.“ Within the customary system, the common units for measuring capacity are fluid ounces, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Selecting the Right Measure It’s important to choose the right unit when measuring. While you could measure the distance from your house to school in inches, it would be easier to measure the distance in miles. It’s also important to know which tool to use when you are measuring objects. For example, it would be pretty hard to measure how much pop your glass can hold with a ruler. Converting Measures In problems which involve measurements such as length, weight, and capacity, it is often necessary to convert from one measurement unit to another. To go from a larger unit to a smaller unit, MULTIPLY. To go from a smaller unit to a larger unit, DIVIDE.
