Expert vs. Novice Teachers Piaget: Constructivist Scaffolding Reorganization of knowledge Social context (Vygotsky)

Constructivist Beliefs Exploratory, problem centered cooperative learning Students play role in deciding learning tasks Teachers use open-ended questions Scaffold through use of expanded responses, probing questions, and clues Big picture – see connections (dribbling) Connect knowledge to real life Students collectively establish ground rules/norms

1. Engaging students in self-regulated construction of knowledge Application of concepts in individual ways (obstacle course) Allow students to struggle, dont give answers Have students think critically about movement quality through questions instead of just reminding them. Adapted lesson based on student performance.

2. Activating students prior knowledge Link concepts to something they already know (absorbing force) Dont just give demos and explanations Talk about previous lessons

3. Facilitating student social cooperation Have students frequently work in groups/partners Sharing ideas across the group Rules for giving feedback/working positively
