What is Advanced Placement (AP) ? (College Board – SAT / PSAT) Mission is to connect students to college level content which will create opportunities AP Program is viewed as a “cooperative educational endeavor” with high schools Rigorous Curriculum that is relevant and embeds 21st century skills – Depth & Breadth AP Exams – Criterion referenced “1-5” Highly Qualified Instructors – BHS Faculty AP Program covers 30 different courses – Emphasis on the STEM courses (Science, Technology, Math and Science) National Core Curriculum – All about alignment and Equity Cooperative Endeavor – BHS Curriculum alignment and how we expand our course offerings strengthening our curriculum/content and skills anchored in AP 21st Century Skills: Incentive Thinking, Information Literacy, Effective Communication skills, High Productivity (Planning for outcomes) Talk about the linear sequence of content and the depth of understanding

WHAT TO EXPECT WITH AP Extensive reading, critical thinking and extensive writing - productivity Homework: approximately 1 hour per night – per AP course Work prior to the course – “Summer Commitment” High Academic Standards – Alignment

AP Performance and College Outcomes Research based findings HS Students who take an AP exam, regardless of performance, are more likely to earn a “B” average in their 1st year of college Students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely to graduate in 4 years Advanced Placement Law (PL 91) Indiana Colleges/Universities must award credit for AP Exam Scores of 3 or higher May require a score of 4 or higher to apply credit to a specific major

Core40 With Academic Honors Diploma – AP/Dual Credit Component Class of 2016 & Beyond Complete one of the following: Earn 4 credits in 2 or more AP courses and take corresponding AP exams Earn 6 verifiable transcripted college credits in dual credit courses from priority course list Earn two of the following: - A minimum of 3 verifiable transcripted college credits from the priority course list - 2 credits in AP courses and corresponding AP exams Earn a combined score of 1750 or higher on the SAT critical reading, mathematics and writing sections and a minimum score of 530 on each Earn an ACT composite score of 26 or higher and complete written section Classes of 2014-2015 Complete one of the following: Complete AP courses (4 credits) and corresponding AP exams Earn a combined score of 1200 or higher on the SAT critical reading and mathematics Score a 26 or higher composite on the ACT Complete dual high school/college credit courses from an accredited postsecondary institution (6 transferable college credits) Complete a combination of an AP course (2 credits and corresponding exam) and dual high school/college credit course(s) from an accredited postsecondary institution (3 transferable college credits)

Why Take Dual Credit Courses? Cost savings $375 for 15 dual credit hours $3000+ in savings at BSU Prepares students for the rigor of college-level work Fulfills Academic Honors Diploma requirement

What Are The Qualifications To Take Dual Credit Courses? Most dual credit courses have prerequisites – refer to Program of Studies Previous coursework PSAT/SAT/ACT test scores or university entrance exam Cumulative GPA

How Much Do Courses Cost? Tuition costs will vary per course. Refer to the Dual Credit brochure for the most recent information. The majority are $25 per credit hour. Students on free and reduced lunch qualify for fee waivers for most courses. Textbook costs are more expensive because they must be purchased. Project Lead The Way Biomedical courses earn credit by examination. Course fees are paid only if student qualifies. Engineering courses can earn free dual credit through Ivy Tech. Fees will vary at other universities upon full-time enrollment as a college student.

Things To Consider…… Refer to the BHS Program of Studies for all course prerequisite requirements. Available on the high school website. Dual credit courses generate a college GPA! Research degree and specific course requirements at potential colleges
