Career in Agricultural Education High School Agriculture Programs

Learning Target  I can identify the areas of work for a high school agriculture teacher.  I can discuss the types of high school agriculture programs

Approach  Think about the areas of agriculture in your area, as well as the rest of the state.  Essential Question: What area the different areas that a teacher of agriculture might work in at their school?

Identify the types of agriculture programs at your school and schools in your region.

 Agriculture education programs vary from school to school; some schools have a specific area of agriculture that they concentrate their work. Other schools study multiple areas of agriculture and some schools have a general approach where many areas of agriculture receive attention.   I AgriBiotechnology  II Ag Education, Communication, &Leadership  III Agribusiness  IV Ag Power, Structural and Technical Systems  V Animal Science Systems  VI Environmental Science and Natural Resource Systems  VII Food Science Systems  VIIIHorticulture and Plant Science Systems 

 Deciding the type of program(s) your school needs should be based on a variety of factors including agriculture and trends in your area, the guidance of your advisory committee, facilities available to you, and history of the program where you are working.

Discuss how an agriculture education program in each of these areas would work throughout the school year.

 Depending on the type of agriculture program your school has, the time and demands on the teacher will change throughout the year. For example Horticulture programs are very scheduled but an Ag Power, Structural and Technical Systems program offers more flexibility.  Have the students build an annual calendar. Allow them to chose a selection of programs they have interest in teaching and have them identify busy and slow times in that program. 

 Essential Questions: How would each of these agriculture programs be similar to one another? What about these programs would be different? How will schedules and long term planning affect an agriculture program?
