He studied at a one room school, and his father taught him too. His favorite subjects were math and history. He loved guns and hunting more than books. He liked fishing ; he would sit by the creek for hours. When he was 15 he worked as a clerk in a country store. After a few years no body came. They had to close. Adult life Patrick married Sara Shelton on October 1754 in the parlor of their home. After the fire destroyed his house, he quit farming and moved to the town.
