 Number 4 or John Smith, The main protagonist of the book. He is from Lorien, and is in the race known as the Legacies. The Legacies have powers and need to be trained to know how to use them. He is one of the last nine survivors of Lorien. His powers include the manipulation of fire and telekinesis, like all Legacies have. He has to move from place to place to avoid the Mogadorians, an alien race that is trying to hunt him down  Henri, 4’s Cepan. A Cepan is someone who protects the Legacies, or trains them. He possesses no superpowers, unlike 4, but is trained in master hand-to-hand combat. His cover at earth is 4’s Dad. Henri gets killed while being attacked by the Modagorians  Number Six, One of the only nine Legacies to escape Lorien. She pops up at the final battle against the Mogadorians, and saves 4. Her powers include telekinesis and nothing else. She talks in a Australian accent and is pretty cool.

 Sarah Hart, 4’s love interest. She is a year older than him, and is a normal human. She instantly becomes friends with 4, and starts a firm relationship with him. She helps him in the final battle against the Mogadorians.  Sam Goode, 4’s best friend. When 4 first meets him, Sam is explained as a totally nerdy, alien crazed kid. When Sam finds out that 4 is an alien, he starts to calm down and helps 4 develop his powers.  Bernie Coasar, 4’s shape-shifting dog. He also is one of the only animal survivors of Lorien.  Number 3, Another Legacy, he is one of the only nine survivors from Lorien. In the prologue, he gets hunted down and killedby a tribe of Mogadorians.

 The Mongadorians, an evil alien race who is trying to hunt down the Legacies. They destroyed the planet Lorien, and are coming for earth next.
