Pearl S. Buck Buck was a prolific author writing fiction, non-fiction, plays and pieces for periodicals. She was a Nobel Peace Prize winner in Although she was born in the US, she went almost immediately to China with her missionary parents. She spoke Chinese before English. Her mother encouraged her to write something everyday. After she married, her first child was born with profound retardation as a result of PKU. This, along with her early life in China, influenced her writing.

“In 1931, John Day published Pearl's second novel, The Good Earth. This became the best-selling book of both 1931 and 1932, won the Pulitzer Prize and the Howells Medal in 1935, and would be adapted as a major MGM film in 1937.“

“Wang Lung shook his head hopelessly. In his bosom lay the slight, skeleton-like body of his girl child, and he looked down into the delicate bony face, and into the sharp, sad eyes that watched him unceasingly from this breast. When he caught those eyes in his glance, invariably there wavered upon the child’s face a flickering smile that broke his heart.” from Pearl S. Buck in The Good Earth.

The Good Earth is the story of the marriage of Wang Lung and O-Lan. It tells how they mature from the beginning of their married life and live out their many struggles. Although it is set in a peasant village in China, their life and how they grow as humans applies to all of us. I felt outrage when I would read how Wang Lung treated O-Lan. O-Lan was an unpretentious woman. She has no ulterior motives, other than she was always driven by the desire to do what was right and take care of her husband and family.
