Word for Word: tarhi — then; eva — also; atha — therefore; muni- ś re ṣṭ ha — O chief amongst the munis; p ā ṇḍ av ā ḥ — all the sons of P ā ṇḍ u; pañca — five; s ā yak ā n — weapons ā tmana ḥ — own selves; abhimukh ā n — towards; d ī pt ā n — glaring; ā lak ṣ ya — seeing it; astr ā ṇ i — weapons; up ā dadu ḥ — took up.

Translation O foremost among the great thinkers [munis, Ś aunaka], seeing the glaring brahm ā stra proceeding towards them, the P ā ṇḍ avas took up their five respective weapons.

P URPORT The brahm ā stras are finer than the nuclear weapons. A ś vatth ā m ā discharged the brahm ā stra simply to kill the P ā ṇḍ avas, namely the five brothers headed by Mah ā r ā ja Yudhi ṣṭ hira and their only grandson, who was lying within the womb of Uttar ā. Therefore the brahm ā stra, more effective and finer than the atomic weapons, was not as blind as the atomic bombs.

SB 1.8.6SB — Lord Ś r ī K ṛṣṇ a caused three well- performed a ś vamedha-yajñas [horse sacrifices] to be conducted by Mah ā r ā ja Yudhi ṣṭ hira and thus caused his virtuous fame to be glorified in all directions, like that of Indra, who had performed one hundred such sacrifices. SB 1.8.7SB — Lord Ś r ī K ṛṣṇ a then prepared for His departure. He invited the sons of P ā ṇḍ u, after having been worshiped by the br ā hma ṇ as, headed by Ś r ī la Vy ā sadeva. The Lord also reciprocated greetings. SB 1.8.8SB — As soon as He seated Himself on the chariot to start for Dv ā rak ā, He saw Uttar ā hurrying toward Him in fear.

SB 1.8.9SB — Uttar ā said: O Lord of lords, Lord of the universe! You are the greatest of mystics. Please protect me, protect me, for there is no one else who can save me from the clutches of death in this world of duality. SB SB — O my Lord, You are all-powerful. A fiery iron arrow is coming towards me fast. My Lord, let it burn me personally, if You so desire, but please do not let it burn and abort my embryo. Please do me this favor, my Lord. SB SB — S ū ta Gosv ā m ī said: Having patiently heard her words, Lord Ś r ī K ṛṣṇ a, who is always very affectionate to His devotees, could at once understand that A ś vatth ā m ā, the son of Dro ṇ ā c ā rya, had thrown the brahm ā stra to finish the last life in the P ā ṇḍ ava family.

SB SB — O foremost among the great thinkers [munis] [ Ś aunaka], seeing the glaring brahm ā stra proceeding towards them, the P ā ṇḍ avas took up their five respective weapons. SB SB — The almighty Personality of Godhead, Ś r ī K ṛṣṇ a, having observed that a great danger was befalling His unalloyed devotees, who were fully surrendered souls, at once took up His Sudar ś ana disc to protect them. SB SB — The Lord of supreme mysticism, Ś r ī K ṛṣṇ a, resides within everyone’s heart as the Param ā tm ā. As such, just to protect the progeny of the Kuru dynasty, He covered the embryo of Uttar ā by His personal energy.

SB SB — O Ś aunaka, glory of Bh ṛ gu’s family, although the supreme brahm ā stra weapon released by A ś vatth ā m ā was irresistible and without check or counteraction, it was neutralized and foiled when confronted by the strength of Vi ṣṇ u [Lord K ṛṣṇ a]. SB SB — O br ā hma ṇ as, do not think this to be especially wonderful in the activities of the mysterious and infallible Personality of Godhead. By His own transcendental energy He creates, maintains and annihilates all material things, although He Himself is unborn. SB SB — Thus saved from the radiation of the brahm ā stra, Kunt ī, the chaste devotee of the Lord, and her five sons and Draupad ī addressed Lord K ṛṣṇ a as He started for home.
