Battle of Sullivan’s Island

James Island Decided to build fort due to British Threat Fort Johnson – built earlier to protect from SP Knew British would come, but when?? Built quickly - only materials available: palmetto trees and sand

June 28, 1776 – British Arrive 11 ShipsFort on Sullivan’s Island only finished 2900 Troopson three sides!! Uh oh!!! This is before what important decision?

Breeches Inlet defended by group of Orangeburg Militiamen British soldiers landed on Long Island (now Isle of Palms) – THE PLAN: expanse between islands is only 18 in. deep land forces & attack Americans (450 in fort) from the rear. Actually: water depth over 7 feet at high tide

British guide not familiar with harbor 3 ships caught on sandbars 2 – loosed 1- burned

Cannon balls fired at the fort bounced off or stuck in the walls Palmetto logs are spongy (soft) (Americans later dug them out and used them against the British in another battle)

How were the patriots able to win?

Importance of the Victory For SC –Proved we could defeat BR (built morale/confidence) –Saved CT (most important city in SC) –Provided important symbolism (flag) For NATION –Proved we could defeat BR fleet (Considered the best navy in the world at that time) -Saved Charles Town (Charleston) One of 5 largest ports Most important port in South SC a wealthy colony

Col. William Moultrie – Commander of “unfinished Fort on Sullivan’s Island” Fort later named after him - Fort Moultrie

William Jasper During battle, flag fell Climbed over ramparts Brought back to fort Put on cannon sponge and re- displayed on the fort.
