 Adverb  Away from the appropriate, planned, or expected course; amiss: "many youthful romances go awry".  Out of the normal or correct position; askew. Synonyms askew - aslant - amiss - askance

 Adjective  Incapable of producing any useful result; pointless. Synonyms vain - useless - unavailing – fruitless - idle - nugatory
