Safety in the Science Lab MCPS Middle Schools

WHAT IS SCIENCE LAB SAFETY ? Students will be able to demonstrate safe behavior and procedures when completing science investigations.

BEHAVIOR IN THE LAB No off task behavior (ever!) No doing your own experiments. Never enter the equipment and chemical storage room. No eating or drinking in the lab.

GENERAL RULES FOR SCIENCE SAFETY ONLY WORK WHEN A TEACHER IS IN THE ROOM

GENERAL RULES FOR SCIENCE SAFETY ONLY TOUCH MATERIALS WHEN THE TEACHER GIVES PERMISSION

GENERAL RULES FOR SCIENCE SAFETY DURING AN INVESTIGATION NO EATING OR DRINKING DURING AN INVESTIGATION

FIRE PROCEDURES Notify the teacher of a fire and then follow his/her directions. Do not attempt to fight the fire. Use the fire blanket to put a fire out on a person’s hair or clothing (wrap them in the blanket.) Keep all aisles and walkways clear to allow for a safe exit in case of an emergency.

USE OF MATERIALS You are responsible for returning your own materials. Never take any materials from the classroom. Tell the teacher if you are allergic to something used in the investigation. If your equipment is not working properly, inform the teacher.

USING HEAT, CHEMICALS, GLASSWARE AND ELECTRICITY You must always wear goggles as specified by the teacher. Make sure areas around electrical sockets are dry before using.

WEARING GOGGLES WEAR YOUR GOGGLES! If it can splash, break, spill, or fit into your eye…. WEAR YOUR GOGGLES!

GOT GOGGLES? Sharp trauma Blunt trauma Chemical splash Broken glass Eye penetration pencil

USING HEAT, CHEMICALS, GLASSWARE, AND ELECTRICITY Always point what you are heating away from yourself and others. Do not put any lighted object such as a burner next to something marked “flammable”. Flammable means something which catches fire easily.

ACCIDENTS, SPILLS, AND BREAKAGES Report any accident or injury to the teacher immediately. Red panic button shuts off gas and electricity. Report a chemical spill to the teacher and wait for directions on how to clean it up. Put broken glass in designated container.

CORROSIVE MATERIALS Never handle anything that is labeled corrosive. Wear goggles and an apron. Corrosive means that chemical reacts with skin.

A LITTLE HUMOR

GETTING RID OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL WASTE Follow teacher directions for getting rid of any waste product. Put it in the correct container.

HAIR, CLOTHING AND CONTACT LENSES Tie back long hair. Roll up long sleeves. Wear closed shoes. Let the teacher know if you wear contact lenses.

WASHING HANDS Wash hands with soap and water after working with biological specimens or chemicals.

Where is the safety equipment located in this room? Follow along as your teacher shows you the locations of the following pieces of safety equipment in the room. Draw and map of the room and label each piece of equipment. Fire blanket Fire extinguisher Exits Eye wash station Emergency shower (if present) Fire alarms (detectors) Waste disposal container Emergency cut-off switch

THAT’S ALL FOLKS!
