Chapter 1 – What Is Civics? Guiding Questions: What is Civics? What ideals form the basis of the U.S. government and the American way of life? What are the roles and qualities of a good citizen?

The Meaning of Civics The study of what it means to be a US citizen. Rights and resp. of citizens changed over time. Differ from country to country – WHY? Depends on country’s type of government. Americans participate in society in many ways: Family, school Communities, towns, etc.

American Ideals: US gov’t. and American way of life based on ideals of freedom and equality. (How can we represent these ideas?) Guaranteed rights and freedoms Protected by laws Must be willing to do your share to protect heritage of liberty.

A Heritage of Freedom: Freedom to learn State and local gov’ts. provide free public schools. Freedom to choose a job/career. Free to: own a house, raise a family, have own spiritual beliefs. Free to start your own business, etc.

Gov’t by the People: The people rule through officials they elect. Founders ensured gov’t would continue to serve America. (How did they do this?) Voting in elections is an important responsibility. Why? Responsibility to inform officials of your needs or disagreements.

Importance of Civics Take part in government Problem-solving in communities Economics, taxes Careers, education United States and other nations Keeps citizens informed
