Chiang Kai-Shek China/Taiwan Democracy Led Chinese nationalists against Chinese communists in the Chinese Civil War. When the communists took over China, Chiang had to leave the mainland and go live on the island of Taiwan.

Mao Zedong People’s Republic of China Communism Led the Chinese communists against the Chinese nationalists in the Chinese Civil War. Mao was the leader of communist People’s Republic of China for decades. His policies killed tens of millions of Chinese people.

Ho Chi Minh Vietnam Communism Led the fight for Vietnamese independence against the French. (Vietnam was a French colony called Indo-China.)

George C. Marshall USA Democracy American general and Secretary of State who wrote the Marshall Plan for rebuilding Europe after WWII.

Harry S. Truman USA Democracy American President who made the decision to drop the Atomic bombs on Japan. This decision started the “nuclear arms race”. Truman defended South Korea against a communist takeover from the north (Korean War).

Gen. Mac Arthur USA Democracy American general in the Pacific who led counter attacks against Japan in WWII and North Korea in the Korean War. Mac Arthur was responsible for helping to rebuild Japan after WWII.

Kim Il Sung North Korea Communism Led communist North Korea against South Korea and USA in the Korean War. Father of Kim Jong Il and grandfather of Kim Jong Un, the current leader of North Korea. Kim Il Sung in 1956 “The Dear Leader”

Fidel Castro Cuba Communism Led communist revolution in Cuba. He allowed Soviet nuclear missiles on Cuba, which is 90 miles off the coast of Florida.
