Weekly Plan ENG II CP 7 September

Students will: Spell– and use correctly– specific vocabulary Understand when to use commas in parenthetical phrases, introductory phrases, and in series. Understand parody and satire of myths and how those help us understand our own and different cultures.

Vocabulary Parody (n.)– a humorous work in which the author imitates the style or ideas of other works in an exaggerated or a ridiculous way. Conceits (n.)– elaborate comparisons or metaphors Adulation (n.)– excessive praise or admiration. Folderol (n.)– nonsense. Lucidity (n.)– clarity; quality of being understood. Sonorous (adj.)– having a rich or impressive sound. Extolled (adj.)– praised.

Writing Response Please respond to the following prompt with a well-thought out paragraph of at least 50 words: Should Don Quixote be made to see reality? Defend your choice.

Commas Use a comma to separate the elements in a series (three or more things), including the last two. For example: – "He hit the ball, dropped the bat, and ran to first base.“ Use a comma + a little conjunction (and, but, for, nor, yet, or, so) to connect two independent clauses, as in:independent clauses – "He hit the ball well, but he ran toward third base." Use a comma to set off introductory elements: – "Running toward third base, he suddenly realized how stupid he looked." Use a comma to set off parenthetical elements,: – "The Milton-Madison Bridge, which spans the Ohio River, is falling down."

Recall Questions What is La Mancha? Don Quixote has many illusions about the world around him. What illusion does he have about the windmills? His horse (and her name)? In modern-day parlance, tilting at windmills means “to attempt the impossible”. How does this idiom reflect the story read this week? What does Sancho Panza do after Don Quixote jousts with windmills? What does this tell you about his character? What do Don Quixote and the village priest argue about?

Discussion Questions Why does the author (Cervantes) choose to make Don Quixote poor? What is the reader supposed to feel toward Don Quixote? What is Cervantes’ opinion of reading and education? Support your answer with textual references. How does Don Quixote's worldview differ from Sancho Panza's? Which is “right”?
