Understanding Earth Review

Rotation (rotates) – spinning on the axis (turns) What does rotation give Earth and how long does it take to rotate? The concept of night and day – it takes 24 hours to rotate one time What does rotation look like, demonstrate it:

Revolution the journey around the sun Demonstrate revolution: How long does it take and what concept of time does it give Earth? 365¼ days – it gives us the concept of a year

Axis an imaginary line that passes through the center of Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole that Earth turns around…it tilts at 23½° angle

66N North Pole 23½N Arctic Circle 0 Tropic of Cancer 23½S Equator Axis 66N North Pole 23½N Arctic Circle 0 23½S Tropic of Cancer Equator 66S Tropic of Capricorn Antarctic Circle South Pole

Why do we have seasons? With the tilt of the earth and the revolution around the sun, the Earth experiences different seasons: When is it summer? When the hemisphere is tilted towards the sun When is it winter? When the hemisphere is tilted away from the sun Seasons are… Opposite What are the solstices? Summer = longest day of the year (daylight) Winter = shortest day of the year (darkness) Equinoxes are… When the earth is directly above the equator and is not tilted towards or away from the sun Spring and Fall

Demonstrate Seasons:

4 Arctic Ocean 6 Asia North America 7 Europe 8 Atlantic Ocean Pacific Ocean Africa 2 1 5 9 Pacific Ocean South America Indian Ocean 10 Australia 11 3 Antarctica 12

What effects Climate: Latitude Elevation Water Closer to equator = warmer Farther from equator = colder Elevation Higher elevation = colder Lower elevation = warmer Water Proximity (nearness in place) Closer to water = more mild Farther away = more variation Currents – warm and cold streams of water Wind – currents – warm and cold streams of air

Winds blow clouds upward Explain the Rain Shadow Effect: Stage 3 Precipitation Stage 4 Stage 2 Winds blow clouds upward Stage 1 Backside is dry Evaporation and cloud creation Stage 1

What does these graphs tell you…analyze them and tell why they are the way they are… Use your 4 factors of climate and think about which hemisphere they are in:

Northern Hemisphere Inland Away from equator

This is near the equator. Near the equator, near water, Northern Hemisphere

Not real close to the equator, but not far away from it Average high °F 82 81 76 68 60 54 53 55 61 67 73 79 Southern Hemisphere Somewhat inland Not real close to the equator, but not far away from it

Northern Hemisphere, far from equator, inland

Near equator and near water

You are going to do great on this You are going to do great on this! Let me know if you have any questions or need anything at all. You will demonstrate the rotation, revolution, axis, solstices, and equinoxes with your body or with a globe. Have a super duper night!
