Prehistoric Art (Cave Paintings)

Objective: To learn about Cave Art and what it can tell us about Ancient people. _____________________________________ Since there were no books written during the Stone Age, the cave art is very important. It gives us a glimpse into the ancient world.

Pictograph: Painting on a surface like a cave wall. Petroglyph: Design carved into rock or other surface.

Cave of Lascaux, France Discovered by four boys on September 12 th, Caves are filled with pictographs and petroglyphs of hundreds of animals. Dated to about 17,00 years ago.

There are almost 600 pictures of animals, mostly horses. Other animals painted are stags, bulls, and bison Only one man is painted.

Why did they paint the cave? What do the paintings mean? Just the animals that were around at that time. Instructions on how to hunt or not to hunt. The cave was used for religious ceremonies. Paintings were for good luck in hunting.
