To be eSafe requires more than having sound policies and procedures in place. It requires having a culture of vigilance and openness where all staff, learners and other stakeholders are aware of their responsibilities and act accordingly when using technology within an educational or social context. To be eSafe all stakeholders should be adequately trained making them aware of their rights, responsibilities and what to do if things good wrong! eSafety provision includes all stakeholders and is embedded within all curriculum areas. Training is systematically planned and learners are helped to assess the risks of accessing online resources. Training programmes are systematically reviewed and updated. Evaluations are regularly carried out and feedback is provided. A core team for eSafety is used to establish clear policies and procedures. The team should consist of a wide cross section of staff and stakeholders. e-Safety is outstanding where the institution manages systems rather than locking them down. All stakeholders are aware of eSafety policies and procedures and the consequences of their actions. What can we do? Form a cross institutional working group –Risk assessment Identify risk and its nature Identify the impact, likelihood of each risk. Classify each risk (colour code, numerical ranking) Identify who has a responsibility for that risk. Log a review date against each risk. Specify the risk reduction processes for each risk. –Policies and Procedures –All policies should reviewed on a regular bases and reflect changes in the innovative use of technology.
