You are joining the European Institute: Multi-disciplinary ‘Institute’: – economics; political economy; public policy; international relations; law; history; social policy; politics, geography and philosophy Ranked first for research: European Studies – by U.K. Government (HEFCE) ‘Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence’ Arguably, we are the leading venue for public debate about Europe in the U.K.

Our Teaching The European Institute teaches post-graduates only, with a very wide array of programmes: – MSc European Political Economy; – MSc Politics & Government in the EU; – MSc European Studies: Ideas and Identities; – MSc European Studies (Research); – Double Degree with Sciences Po, Paris; – MPA in European Public and Economic Policy; – MPhil & PhD

Our local history... Site of our own EI building: burial ground where poor buried in a mass vault, with body-snatchers in 1850s [The Times’]. Lincoln’s Inn Fields: largest public square in London since 1630s. An area of public execution as late as C19th. Cooper’s Restaurant: site of Duke’s Theatre where Handel’s last two operas were first performed in George IV pub – a pub on site since 1860s.

The MSc Student Adviser This year it is Claire Gordon Act as a point of contact for individual student concerns about teaching within the Institute where the student’s Academic Adviser, Course Convenor or Programme Director is not available Assist individuals with essay writing and study skills where required Act as a point of contact for any pastoral concerns that may arise, including from overseas students who are having difficulty adjusting to London life

The EI Office European Institute is in Cowdray House, Portugal Street: – opposite George IV pub, between LSE Bookshop and Library. General Office, COW 2.15: – Enquiries: weekdays 2pm-4.30pm

What you need to do (1) Register- tomorrow Register at the European Institute General Office (COW 2.15) and Collect your MSc Handbook Open between 11.30am-4.30pm tomorrow.

What you need to do (2) Wednesday: collect Academic Adviser’s name Check the noticeboards on the Ground Floor, First Floor or Second Floor of Cowdray House. Look under your degree programme for the name of your Academic Adviser and for details of your first meeting with him/her.

What you Need to Do (3) Thursday: attend your Programme Induction LSE-Sciences Po Double Deg in European Studies 09.30am-10am in room CON 1.06 MSc European Political Economy 10am-11.30am in room NAB 1.04 MSc European Studies: Ideas and Identities 11.30am-1pm in room CON 1.05 MSc Politics & Government in the EU 2pm-3.30pm in CLM 2.02 MSc Research/MPhil/PhD 4pm-5.30pm in NAB 1.18

What You Need to Do (4) Meet Academic Adviser You must see your Adviser: check when he/she will see you - either – From 3pm Thursday onwards; or – from 3pm Friday.

What You Need to Do (5) Go to Options Fair - FRIDAY MSc European Political Economy and MSc European Studies: Ideas and Identities: Friday 10.30am-11.30am in CLM MSc Politics and Government in the European Union: Friday 11.30am-12.30pm in CLM 6.02.

What you need to do (6) Choose Options Check times/rooms of courses: go to LSE webpage: ‘Timetables’. Avoid clashes. Enter your course choices via LSE for You. Sign up for a seminar group for each course via LSE for You. Get course materials: reading lists from Moodle. Check books. Go to Library induction on Friday afternoon.

What you need to do (7) Register your Courses You must discuss your course choices with your Academic Adviser, then: Complete your (MSc) course and seminar registration online via LSE For You by no later than 17 October. Teaching begins week of Monday 3 October.

Be patient… Registration & first weeks: confusing. Staff are busy & you have lots of information to digest. Things get clearer when you’ve selected your courses & you know your timetable. Plan your work….over the term: time management
