Algebra It’ not about the maths It’s about the English! Actually we are learning a new language… Algebra!

Algebra y = mx + c We are going to be exploring this equation this week to understand what it means.

Algebra y = mx + c By the end of the week you should : Understand what the y, m, x and c stand for Be able to plot a straight line graph using this equation Be able to read values for x and y off the graph you plot.

Algebra We are going to start by taking the equation y = x+1. If we replace x with a 3 then we know what y will be. y =x 3 y = 4 +1

x 0123 y=x+1y Algebra We replace x with several numbers and work out what y is each time. We put these in a table

x 0123 y=x+1y Algebra We can add a new row to the table for a new equation, now lets add a row for y=x+2 and fill in the blanks 1234 x 0123 y=x+1y y=x+2y 2345

The final task is to plot the x and y points on a graph y x x 0123 y=x+1y x x x x

Algebra You have four tables of equations. Your task this lesson is to: 1.Work out the missing values of y for each equation 2.Plot the line for each equation 3.Identify how m and c affect the line!
