Local connections, run by college or department IT services cannot set up a connection to a College or Department network for you as we do not run the network inside the college or department You must: have anti-virus software installed and kept up to date (Sophos is free to all members of the University ) keep your OS updated (e.g. Windows Update) Wireless network connections OWL (Oxford Wireless LAN); Eduroam Connecting to the network College or department specifics August 25, 2014 IT at the University of Oxford Slide 14

Peer-to-peer file sharing (e.g. BitTorrent, LimeWire) is frowned upon and may be forbidden by your college or department Non-permitted P2P activity may result in disconnection or a fine or even a visit to the Proctors Skype is permitted, see: Oxford backbone and JANET AUP software Network usage August 25, 2014 IT at the University of Oxford Slide 15

Remote Access uses a separate password, NOT your SSO password VPN service – – Needed for use of OWL, the Oxford Wireless LAN – Used for access to some resources that are restricted to the University network when your computer is not directly connected to the OU network. e.g. on a commercial broadband service or via Eduroam (below). Eduroam service – – An international federation of academic institutions which allows its users to visit other organizations and obtain WiFi access using the same username and password as they would use at their home institution. – NB you may need to use VPN over Eduroam for access to some services Remote Access August 25, 2014 IT at the University of Oxford Slide 16

Each user is allowed 15MB of web space Activate it on (‘Manage web space’ in IT Services Registration login) Access using Oxford username and password Use SCP, SFTP (unsecured FTP is not permitted) to place files on web space Need to use “makeweblinks” command on linux server for SCP connection Details on IT Services web site May not be used for commercial purposes or to bring the University into disrepute Personal Web Space August 25, 2014 IT at the University of Oxford Slide 17

OxFile: Large File Exchange Service Sometimes you want to transfer a file to someone but it is too large to attach to an or to put into your personal web space. OxFile is the University’s “DropBox” service Visit it on Limits: (file) 25Gb, (folder) 40Gb Access using Oxford username and password Can be used for receiving files as well as for passing them to others Data can be received from/passed to people outside the University August 25, 2014 IT at the University of Oxford Slide 18

Computer virus? protect your computer software & regular updates available from IT Services Keep machines up to date!
