Welcome to the Department of Social Sciences Lecturing/Teaching Staff Dr Peter Jepson (Head of Department) Ms W. Attewell

We have fun in Politics lessons - but there are rules … What do you think the rules/requirements are?

Requirements in lessons … No mobile phones or iPods in the classroom. Do NOT chat while a Lesson or Lecture is taking place. No food and drink to be eaten in class. Bright students ask questions - raise your hand to do so.

What does this statement mean? "Being a good student is not just about examination results - it is also about being trustworthy and reliable." Dr Peter Jepson

It means … 1. We expect a 100% class attendance - explain in writing if you miss one lesson. 2. We expect you to arrive early for lessons. 3. We require ALL homework to be handed in before the deadline - late homework is a fail (when reports go home to parents a fail grade is reflected in your attainment). 4. Think about your excellent references!

Politics Zero-Tolerance Policy Students with poor attendance inevitably have poor examination results. 1. If you miss a single lesson - you are expected to arrive at the next class with some additional work (from the EssayBank) in your hand. 2. Even if you are ill – you MUST do the homework.

Politics Zero-Tolerance Policy If you fail to hand in homework on time - you will be given some additional work from the EssayBank - this needs to be completed for the following Monday. Advice: You do not even want to think about the consequences of failing to hand in additional work as per the deadline.

Prior to class … We expect you to print off and bring to class Lecture notes and other materials - from the LawsBlog or We expect you to come to class havingread and precised the required materials - we will check your precis book/notes. Read and precis is NOT AN OPTION - it is a necessary requirement.

Read and precis work can help make Politics: Fun! - you will understand the arguments and enjoy the banter. This will apply because you will be actively participating in class at an informed level of understanding.

Once you have done the read and precis work, and revision, passing the public examination is easy. All you need to do is to answer the exam question in the allocated time (do not just write about the subject). Remember: The difference between an A grade and a B grade is just one mark. The difference between an A grade and E grade is reading (precis when you read).

If you need help … Ask - its free! (Laws staff enjoy helping students). Please see your Politics Teacher at the end of class (or when they are not teaching). If you want help with your homework - Dr Peter Jepson (i.e. during term time or vacation) -

Remember … Poltics does involve some necessary work. But, it can be fun! It is and can be rewarding! Politics is not just about examination results - it is also about being trustworthy and reliable. If you are trustworthy and reliable - the examinations are generally easy.
