HELLENIC MATHEMATICAL SOCIETY PRAUGE / 11 / 2010 EFFECTS OF GENDER STEREOTYPES IN HUMAN ACTIVITIES

STEREOTYPES A generalized and standardized approach (often extreme and rigid) for a group of people. Stereotypes "lock" people in hypothetical roles, which they never have chosen by themselves

Features of stereotypes They are: very simplified, inherited and not acquired by direct experience with "others." Incorrect, - some less, some more- but it is logically impossible to be correct. Resistant to change.

GENDER STEREOTYPES Roles of Gender are our expectations for "good" attitudes, activities and attitudes of both sexes. The social roles of women (what we believe is 'good' for them but not good for men), often leads women in relationships of subordination and positions of weakness.

Masculinity - Femininity Men: tough, aggressive, daring, dominant. Objective: good work Women: 'soft' emotional, sweet, submissive. Objective: good mothers These roles are "socially constructed" and not "biologically pre-defined.

Stereotypes about women Diva Princess Tomboy Bitch / 'Faousa " Hooker (easy, dressed provocatively) Girl Next Door Dumb blonde Lolita

Stereotypes about men Good boy Gorgeous Mammothreftos Effeminate For women, there are much more negative than positive stereotypes.

stereotypes for both sexes illustrate how a society, afraid the diversion of men and women from defined social roles. We must be careful whenever we use biology to explain the social oppression of women. (Biology as Ideology, Richard Lewontin, 1990) The "F" word (Feminism). The dirty word: "I believe in equality but I am not a feminist." In this way patriarchal societies, convinced women to be afraid to identify with feminism, in order not to be assumed that they may hate the men, they are bad etc
