The King’s SLR Leadership Development Programme: A trainee’s prospective Dr. Omar Mukhtar SpR in Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics

The problem Management – a problem that comes with “moving upstairs” A lack of “belonging” An inability to appreciate or affect change A failure by NHS Trusts to communicate their strategy to staff

The programme 4 Modules:Personal & team development Working on projects and managing change The business of healthcare Engaging with stakeholders Keele clinical management course Project presentation

Stepping back… King’s College Hospital:employs 43 core medical trainees is a lead provider for core medical training earns 10% of its income from education No indigenous PACES course Large pool of “untapped” resources: patients clinicians

“Practise PACES” An opportunity to experience the “highs and lows” of the PACES exam – making the “real event” a little less daunting Pilot: 13 January 2011 Re-run: 12 September 2011 An integral part of the clinical training available at King’s

13/01/1112/09/11 CONTENT 1The “cases” were set at an appropriate level54.4 2The content was relevant to my learning needs The examiners appeared well informed about the subject(s)4.8 4The examiners appeared enthusiastic about the subject(s) The feedback received was constructive The course was delivered at the right pace The course was of a reasonable length STRUCTURE 8The purpose of the course was clear The course was well organised OVERALL 10Overall, the course was of a high quality4.64.8

The feedback session was extremely useful. Really glad I could attend this. More spaces for CMTs to attend – it is a good course and would be very well attended even if there were 20 places. Good reflection of real life PACES. Good use of real life patients. A little bit more briefing for the examiners – going through the marksheet for example. Need handgel for each station.

Looking forwards… An integral part of the clinical training available at King’s An appreciation of the challenges and rewards of affecting change An opportunity to develop a wider array of skills An opportunity to innovate
