Self Directed Support 21 st January 2010 David Vitty Acting Head of Service Development

“Living WellLiving Well Within Our MeansWithin Our Means” Transforming Social Care

Be independent Be healthy Have control Have dignity and respect We want people to

Self Directed Support

Self Directed Support findings We did 400 supported assessments Three quarters were with older people. Half of the people who had a service had a personal budget

What do people spend personal budgets on ? Home care Day care Leisure Shopping and Housework Personal assistant Education Respite Transport

What service users thought Everyone liked the assessment Everyone felt involved in the assessment Most people liked the support planning Most people liked the services they bought

What else do we need to do ? Make sure services are available Help people employ their own assistants Train our staff Tell people about SDS

What can go wrong ? Will people have money stolen from them ? Will people spend money on the right things ? Can Dorset County Council afford to do this ?
