Why Read Write Inc ? We believe that, children are only successful at school if they have learnt to read well. Our aim is to get children reading sufficiently to enable them to access the whole curriculum. RWI is a carefully constructed teaching programme, alongside carefully matched resources and books. It provides a lively, structured, and above all, rigorous approach to the teaching of phonics - and literacy as a whole. The programme was devised so that no child would slip through the net.

RWI - FAQ When was RWI introduced? How was my child chosen to be in a RWI group ? How many groups are there ? Who teaches RWI ? When will my child move groups? What will my child be doing ? How will I know my child is making progress ? What happens after RWI ?

Assessment All Year 3 children who achieved 2a or below at KS1, were assessed in the first 2 weeks of term. Children are then assigned to the appropriate colour according to their reading ability.

What does the assessment look like ? Ditties group (group 1): a big hot sun a man in a hat a dog in a box a cat on a mat Grey Group (group 8) The king and his people had a meeting about the rats. Suddenly, the door was thrown open and a strange fellow came into the room. He had bells on his toes and he held a pipe. Standing alone in the doorway, he spoke to the king.

How Many Groups ? There are 8 colour coded groups. Ditties – Green – Purple – Pink – Orange – Yellow – Blue – Grey. Groups are kept as small as possible. This allows for pupil’s individual needs to be met.

Who Teaches RWI ? When we first introduced RWI in 2009, teachers and teaching assistants were fully trained to teach the programme . Groups are monitored regularly to ensure the children are effectively learning.

Moving through the Scheme The children are assessed at the end of every term. If they are successful, they move to the next appropriate level. Some children skip groups due to the good progress they have made. If your child tells you they have moved groups, they are making good progress.

What do the children learn? For one hour a day every day. Speed sounds – There are 26 letters in our alphabet which make up 44 sounds. 120 combinations of letters (graphemes). How to decode (read) and encode (spell). Read, spell, write sentences and edit work. New vocabulary.

Speed Sounds Sounds are taught in a specific order. Set 1 ~ Set 2 ~ Set 3 Activities are short, active and fun. Repetition Only pure sounds are used. NO hands up MTYT (my turn your turn) TTYP (talk to your partner)

Resources Each child has access to a copy of the reading book and their own Get Writing book. Each group will have their own set of resources. Every group uses the same style resources so that there is repetition throughout the scheme.

After Read Write Inc Once your child is able to confidently read the final assessment piece, they will move into a literacy group. The focus will then be on improving their writing skills and understanding different types of text. Reading for meaning and showing an understanding of what they have read. (comprehension)
