Supporting education and research JISC ‘Accessing the Future’ Addressing the needs of Further Education and smaller institutions Nicole Harris, JISC Programme Manager

17 November 2004JISC ‘Accessing the Future’2 Some Assumptions… FE colleges do not have the technical staff or competence to use a next generation access management system. FE colleges have no real requirement for devolved access management systems. JISC does not fund this type of development within FE.

17 November 2004JISC ‘Accessing the Future’3 The Real Issues – for all smaller institutions Many small institutions lack staff resource. Internal communication between libraries and IT departments. Lack of time for training. Difficulties of employing project staff. The decision making process.

17 November 2004JISC ‘Accessing the Future’4 Can FE and small institutions implement Shibboleth? Yes! FE KC-ROLO project based at Kidderminster college. One of the most successful of the Core Middleware: Technology Development projects. Aim: to develop a sustainable repository framework partnership (access management key to this).

17 November 2004JISC ‘Accessing the Future’5 Do all FE and small institutions want to implement Shibboleth? No! Several potential models: –Internal implementation of Shib. –Outsourcing Shib maintenance. –Continued use of Athens. –Other options… All possible with right SUPPORT MODELS.

17 November 2004JISC ‘Accessing the Future’6 What does this community need? Full support service for any option. Decision making trees / documentation. Outsourcing options. Flexibility. Internal support.

17 November 2004JISC ‘Accessing the Future’7 What can JISC offer?
