Compact Structure Steering Group (formed February 2007) Theme groups for Recruitment and Retention and Learning and Development formed in July 2007 and developed initial action plans Themed briefing events on the support available to the public sector, sharing information and good practice
Initial benefits Raised the profile of skills agenda within the public sector Shared good practice and ideas locally and across the region Started to see results e.g. in apprenticeship recruitment Early ‘wins’ such as making public sector vacancies available through the website links
Setting the Agenda for We established a Members Charter and consulted on and agreed our priorities for 2008/09 10 additional sector organisations to sign the Skills Pledge Increase the number of apprentices in the sector locally by 60 Organise and deliver two good practice events Increase the number of sector employees accessing literacy / numeracy training by 40 Explore the development of tailored ‘Leadership and Management’ training for the sector
Successes in 2008 At the end of November – we took stock of progress: We now have (excluding schools) 10 public sector organisations committed to the Skills Pledge. Six of these have signed after we staged our ‘Skills Pledge Breakfast Briefing’ in March There has been an increase of (at least) 33 apprentices employed in the public sector since April. We will host at least two good practice events (this one and the Graduate Recruitment Event in Jan) before March 09. We are supporting pilot activity in three sector organisations to increase access to Skills for Life training. We are actively exploring potential models of tailored ‘Leadership and Management’ training for the sector.
Other successes in 2008 We have linked our priorities with LAA delivery plans to encourage and develop a ‘joined up’ approach to improving the skills profile of the area We have supported initiatives to improve graduate recruitment and retention in the sector in the two counties We are actively supporting the ‘Positive About Young People’ scheme We have supported the work of JC+ to develop ‘Local Employment Partnerships’. 11 of our member organisations have now made the ‘Jobs Pledge’ We have embedded our Members’ Charter and we now have 17 organisations committed to working together to address the particular challenges that face the public sector
Moving Forward The Compact has a key role to play in the public sector and local economic development We intend to continue to use our Charter to realise the potential of the Compact - ensuring senior management commitment - engaging across the public sector Our aim is to respond locally, connect regionally We hope to attract funding to continue and build on the work of the Compact …. and we want your input !.. Enjoy the evening and during the workshops please let us know what YOU want from YOUR Compact in 2009
