Lincolnshire and Rutland Public Sector Compact “What Graduates Can Do For You” Welcome and Introduction from Nigel Howells Chief Executive of East Lindsey District Council (Chair of the Lincolnshire and Rutland Public Sector Compact Steering Group)

The Rationale for this Event Lincolnshire has a disproportionately low number of graduates compared to the rest of the East Midlands and Great Britain The net outflow of graduates is greater than the net inflow 50% of the final year students surveyed expected to be working in the public sector three years after graduation. (Although unfortunately most of these don’t expect to be working in Lincolnshire.) The ‘Graduates in the Lincolnshire Labour Market’ Research Report found that:

The Compact’s R&R Group tried to identify the barriers … we found: Poor graduate perceptions of public sector roles Public sector recruitment practices don’t attract graduates Graduates don’t receive extensive careers advice, guidance or support Public sector employers are unaware of the skills and competencies gained in general degree courses

… and then we found … That despite the fact that graduates had issues with working in the sector and there were perceived barriers for graduate entry into employment there were many support activities and initiatives to encourage graduate recruitment in our two counties – these include: Student placement programmes The Graduates at Work initiative IAG for Graduates and Undergraduates Support from the Universities The East Midlands Graduate Recruitment Service Support from the LSC … and so we decided to tell people about these initiatives
