Network Access Alternatives How getting from point A to point B is overly complicated… or if you back up far enough everything begins to look the same!

Introduction Two alternatives for network access:  The Companies’  Bell Canada’s How do we decide between them? Should we decide between them?

Topics of Discussion Point caller making call Point the PSAP from where the emergency response will be directed from Do we really need to go through legacy equipment (and thinking) to get from point A to point B to do this using VoIP?

Today’s E tandems Selective Routers Trunks Etc. Lots of complicated stuff

The Companies’ Proposal Same stuff as before Now with VSPs, media gateways, and IP-enabled tandems, and an private IP subnet! Lots of complicated stuff

Bell Canada’s Proposal Same stuff as before Now with VISPs, Session Border Controllers, souped-up tandems, and a MPLS private network! Lots of complicated stuff

Real Life The result of either proposal is to drive the future down the same old path as the past! Is there another path?

Real Life The result of either proposal is to drive the future down the same old path as the past! Is there another path? YES!

What This Means Go to the desired future end point 1. IP-enable the PSAPs for VoIP 2. Connect all the PSAPs to a private IP network 3. Centralize ALI/ANI, M/SAG databases for VoIP on this IP network 4. Create a third party to manage and operate the IP network and the databases and ensure equal access 5. Connect the VSPs (be they ILEC, CLEC, or VSP-pure) to the same IP network 6. Require the VSP to detect nomadic behavior and confirm caller location before routing to PSAP 7. Leave the legacy wireline and wireless services on the legacy tandems

What the future looks like Lots of complicated stuff VoIP via IP Invest in the future path

What the future looks like Lots of complicated stuff VoIP via IP Invest in the future path Offload the legacy path eventually… i3 with a proven path!

Any questions?
